Can You Paint Over Marble Tile

There is no doubt that painting over marble can be challenging but only if you do it the old fashioned way with hours of preliminary sanding.

It was never really deep enough and it looked sort of chintzy. If you are painting marble tile on a fireplace you do not need to use a roller extension pole. Clean the surface of the marble well. Soap can interfere with primer adhesion.

With paint you can lighten darken or apply a pattern of your own design to your tile to fit any bathroom aesthetic from a retro checkerboard pattern to a cool and contemporary geometric design. However this poses a unique problem when it comes to the sink. Prime and paint any areas inaccessible to the roller using a 2 to 3 inch oil based paintbrush. Because the fireplace is a dry area not subjected to moisture or foot traffic it is possible to paint over the existing marble whether it is tile or a slab.

Mine is staying as is and you don t really see it. With chalk paint you can cover marble in one or two coats with little to no sanding beforehand. If you are a total perfectionist or going over a dark colored marble with a light colored tile you could prime the marble with bonding primer and apply a matching white paint. But every option we liked would cost more than we wanted or had available to spend.

As for a tile countertop if the tiles are well secured just about the only thing you can do that will last is to put a new tile right over the existing ones. Everything from covering over the marble with ceramic tile to removing the marble completely and doing a stone surround.
